LARGE EGG IN HARD PORCELAIN. Imperial Manufactory... - Lot 431 - Coutau-Bégarie
LARGE EGG IN HARD PORCELAIN. Imperial Manufactory of Saint Petersburg, 1900-1917. Of ovoid form, with painted decoration of the monogram in gold letters and Cyrillic characters of the empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia (A F) under an imperial crown and framed by a blue motif. On the reverse side appears a gold rosette surrounded by stars. Beautiful egg model offered by the imperial family for Easter. Good condition. H.: 12 cm - Diameter: 9 cm. History: with the tradition of exchanging decorated eggs at the end of Lent in Russia, according to the Orthodox rite, symbolizing the resurrection of Christ, the imperial factory produced each year different models for the exclusive use of the imperial family, which they offered to their entourage, their relatives and members of the imperial court. Those with an imperial monogram or the Romanoff eagle were personally offered by the tsar or tsarina, like the one we present. Reference: see several models of porcelain eggs decorated with the same monogram in the book "Kostbare Ostereier aus dem Zarenreich" from the collection of Adolphe Peter Goop in Vaduz, pages 259 and 260.
