LARGE EGG IN HARD PORCELAIN. St. Petersburg... - Lot 429 - Coutau-Bégarie
LARGE EGG IN HARD PORCELAIN. St. Petersburg Imperial Manufactory, 1880-1890. Of ovoid form, with central painted decoration of the two-headed eagle of Romanoff polychrome and gold. Beautiful egg model offered by the imperial family on the occasion of Easter. Slight wear to the gilding, but good general condition. H.: 10,5 cm - Diameter: 6,5 cm. History: with the tradition of exchanging decorated eggs at the end of Lent in Russia, according to the Orthodox rite, symbolizing the resurrection of Christ, the imperial factory produced each year different models for the exclusive use of the imperial family, which they offered to their entourage, their relatives and members of the imperial court. Those with the imperial monogram or the Romanoff eagle were given personally by the tsar or tsarina, like the one we present here.
