TABLE SERVICE OF THE GRAND DUKE PAUL PETROVITCH OFFERED BY KING FREDERIC II OF PRUSSIA. Royal Manufacture of Berlin, 1775-1778. Hard porcelain dinner plate with a scalloped edge decorated with a large openwork frieze and enhanced with a gold fillet, with a central decoration of a black double-headed eagle surmounted by a gold imperial crown holding in its claws two polychrome coats of arms of the Imperial House of Romanoff and of the Ducal House of Holstein-Gottorp. Slight wear of the time to the gilding, but good condition. Blue marks on the reverse: sceptre. Diameter: 24,5 cm. Present from King Frederick II of Prussia to Grand Duke Paul Petrovitch of Russia This magnificent service was commissioned by King Frederick II of Prussia (1712- 1786) for Grand Duke Paul Petrovich of Russia, tsarevich of Russia and son of Catherine the Great. The exceptional quality of the gift reflected the high expectations placed on the future ruler of the Russian Empire by the King of Prussia. The service features the double-headed imperial eagle with two coats of arms, one for Imperial Russia and the other for the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp. It is not known for which imperial residence this service was intended and when exactly it was given to the Grand Duke. However, by the end of the 19th century, the majority of the pieces were kept at the Gatchina Palace, the main country residence of the Russian tsar. According to the inventory drawn up in 1884, the service consisted of 357 pieces. Created by the Meissen factory, it was completed by the St. Petersburg factory mainly during the reign of Tsar Alexander II. After the revolution of 1917, most of the pieces were still kept in Gatchina. Then in the early 1930s, through the Antikvariat, a state organization created by the Soviet government, a large part of this service was put up for sale.
