MARIA PAVLOVNA, GRANDE-DUCHESSE DE RUSSIE (1854-1920).
Autograph letter signed "Marie" addressed to her niece the Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of Russia (1875-1960), Paris, May 14, 1912, 4 pages, in-8°, text in English on letterhead with the figure of the Grand Duchess, bordered in black. Folds, as is. Translation: "You must already know from the charming Madame de Stockel what I am going to tell you, because yesterday I spoke to her about it. The young Duke of Montpensier, my nephew, has heard of your beautiful daughter and is very anxious to make her acquaintance. He came to see me to tell me about it and asked me to try to find out if this idea would be well received by you and Sandro. He is a nice looking young man, 28 years old, in excellent health, intelligent and wealthy, just the kind of husband one would want for his daughter, according to my ideas. He is going to Stockholm in June and he could come and stay with me in (...) and from there make visits "along the coast". Now please, think it can pass and give me an answer as long as I am here until the last days of our May, because I will not go to Moscow not feeling really able to bear all these "fatigues". Of course his visit to me does not commit to anything at the moment, only an introduction, if you want to wait for Irina, but he is certainly "a good match" and there are not so many of them now, and also living in France is charming, you also like that and in my opinion that should not be put aside. Thank you very much for your roses and your dear memory of my old birthday. I am sad about all the deaths in your Danish family! Poor mother! I think of her a lot. (...) With a tender kiss. Your loving aunt. Provenance: this letter was kept by the Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna (1875-1960), then passed on by inheritance to her daughter Princess Irina Alexandrovna Youssoupoff (1895-1970), and then kept until today in the descendants of the latter.
