Autograph letter signed "Mom" addressed to her son the tsar Nicolas II (1868-1918), Aï-Todor, February 24, 1918, 4 pages, in-8°°, text in Russian and in French.
Translation: My dear Nicky, I cannot find the words to express my joy after receiving your dear letter. It touched me deeply to tears. I thank you with all my soul and I beg you to write me more often. I want to see you and talk to you so much. I suffer from all this terrible news and I miss you all. My darlings, I think of you all always and very often. How are you? I hope that it is not too hard for you and that we will soon have the opportunity to meet again in Mogilev. I could never forget those sad and difficult days. My only consolation is the hope that I can be with you in a few days. Even so, we can't imagine what the future holds in store for us. It's a real nightmare and it's impossible to even write about it. Even here life is a real torture. As you know, there are terrible riots in Yalta.
Among those affected was poor Maria Bariatinsky, who was kept for 2 nights sitting on the floor with other prisoners, including officers.
And then she was put in prison for a week. All this because of money she gave to (???). But this is not true. It's awful, what a shame after all she did. (...) Betsy lives at home. Their house was under fire and she managed to escape into the city. She has been living at (???) for a few weeks now. Last year Betsy bought "my garden" next to Livadia's farm. The house is too small to live in and she is expanding it.
I am still settled in my two rooms and do not see anyone. I'm preparing soon for Lent (...) is dazed. Nobody is allowed to enter our house since the end of October. We are absolutely isolated and we are trapped.
The question is, for what reason? I don't know anything about A. Alice and Welde, I received their last letter at the end of November. It is just unbearable and too cruel to deprive me of my only small consolation. The weather changes often, it is quite cold and it is especially noticeable in our rooms. But when it is sunny, the room is pleasantly warm. Today we were told that we were going to be expelled from AiTodor and moved to Dulber. I was not happy about it. For them it is more comfortable for security reasons that we are all together. You can imagine my feelings. It is so sad for poor Xenia and all her children. May the Lord help us. May his holy will be done. I am not able to write more. I tenderly embrace the dear Alix and all the dear children. I greet all our relatives. I kiss you my precious Nicky. Your mother who loves you very much.

Maria Feodorovna after her death was never sent to her son, the emperor
Nicholas II. It is therefore a precious historical testimony and one of the few letters ever published from the correspondence between the Dowager Empress and her son.
It was kept by Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna (1875-1960), then passed on by inheritance to her daughter Princess Irina Alexandrovna Yusupov (1895-1970), then preserved until our days in the descendants of the latter.
