IHARCE, Jean-Luc d'
Popular errors on medicine: work composed for the instruction of those who do not profess this science, with the explanation of the terms of art which one could not dispense with using / by M. d'Iharce = Miricountzaren gaineco popoulouiaren faltac : libourou, oficio hartaco eçtiren arguitzeco, miricountzaco thermino bada eta eçbada cerbitzatou behar içandirenen esplicacioniarekin / De Ihartze. P., chez l'auteur, rue Caumartin et chez Méquignon, 1783.
In-12, green morocco, spines decorated, red title page, plates with a figure formed by letters in small point framed by a triple fillet, decorated edges, inner scroll. Smooth spine decorated. Gilt edges. 465 pp, table.
Very charming binding in good condition with an enigmatic figure. The figure that links the letters A, B, Q is placed in a cartouche around which one can read, on the first plate, "agréez charmante nourrice" and, on the last, "de mes fruits naissants le premice".
The bilingual title is very rare. Pierre L. Thillaud makes of this oddity, a first: "Jean-Luc d'Iharce, native of Arberoue in Basse-Navarre, squire, doctor in medicine and doctor patented of the king, publishes in Paris a work entitled Erreurs populaires sur la Médecine [...] this book deserves to be announced. To our knowledge, it is the only medical work with its title in the Basque language.
Handwritten dedication of the author to Mrs. Bernier on the last page. It is not possible to establish precisely the identity of this distinguished lady. However in 1783, the year of the edition of this work, we know that "a Mrs Bernier widow of a doctor of Rheims who has a rather pretty voice, made her debut at the opera on September 29, 1783".
Did the two doctors know each other? If so, the "B" in the figure would be that of the widowed singer!
