LA BLÉTERIE, abbé de
History of the emperor Jovien, and translations of some works of the emperor Julien. By M. l'abbé de La Bléterie Paris, Prault, 1748. 2 vols in-12, full calf, smooth spines decorated with the acorn, title page. The corners of the boards are stamped with the Breteuil arms. T1: False title, frontispiece, title, LXIII, [1] f., 395 pp. T2: false-title, title, table, 435 pp. A very fresh copy with the Breteuil coat of arms, of this translation of a certain number of Julian's writings by the Abbé de La Bléterie who was "both translator and biographer of the prince so long designated as the Apostate, and this double exercise confers to his account an obvious stamp of authenticity" (Bruno Neveu). La Bléterie was, among other things, a professor of eloquence. His proximity to Jansenism explains in part why we know so little about him. Bruno Neveu, Un académicien traducteur et historien de l'empereur Julien: l'abbé de La Bletterie. www.persee.fr/doc/crai_0065-0536_2000_num_144_1_16100
