Julius LeBlanc STEWART (Philadelphie 1855 - 1919 Paris)
Ruin of the Chapel of Saint Arnoult Priory Done in 1874 Oil on canvas 34 x 47 cm Signed, localized and dated lower right: J L Stewart St Arnoult August 26, 74 Son of an American tycoon, nicknamed the "Parisian of Philadelphia", Julius arrived in Paris in 1865 and entered the Beaux-Arts school as a pupil of Gerome. A member of high society thanks to his considerable means, he was a delightful witness to the Paris of the Belle Epoque. This view of the priory of Saint-Arnoul, probably the one in Crépy-en-Valois, founded in 1008, is, in the painter's corpus, an almost unique example of a landscape painted on the motif. Was Julius interested in the ancient building because of its founder, Gauthier II of Vexin, nicknamed "Le Blanc"?
