Important inkwell in antique green and bronze... - Lot 301 - Coutau-Bégarie
Important inkwell in antique green and bronze finely chased and gilded. It rests on four bronze lions' legs, the body of the rectangular inkwell partly hollowed out to form a penholder is decorated with a rhyton with a chimeric lion's head framed by two Athenian cups with winged lion's head and hock. Attributed to Pierre-Philippe THOMIRE (1751 - 1843). H. : 22,5 cm, W. : 40,5 cm ; D. : 22,5 cm Epoque Empire. (Small chips and a small restoration to the marble) The Antique Green or Egyptian Green is a precious serpentine breccia used since antiquity. The high quality of the marble of our inkwell can be compared to the pair of antique columns discovered in Rome in 1766, mounted by Gouthière for the Duc d'Aumont and kept in the Louvre Museum (MR1191)
