Important tapestry of Brussels (Flanders) first half of the XVIIth century. Dimensions 320 cm high x 465 cm wide Title : The entry of Massinissa in Carthage. In wool and silk. Probably metal and gold threads: princely order. Oxidation and natural wear. Restorations. Massinissa contributed in 203 BC to the rout of his opponent Syphax, Berber king of western Numidia, and to his capture by the Roman commander Gaius Laelius. Syphax was then sent to Rome as a prisoner where he died in 202 or 203 BC and the Romans granted king Massinissa the kingdom of Syphax in gratitude for his help. At the head of his famous Numidian cavalry, he participated with Rome in the defeat of Carthage at the battle of Zama in 202 BC.
