HUYSMANS, Joris-Karl (1848-1907). - Lot 239
HUYSMANS, Joris-Karl (1848-1907). Set of 4 pieces : 2 L.A.S. and 2 C.A.S., addressed to the jurist and friend of naturalists Gabriel Thyébaut (1854-1922). Ligugé, November and December 1899. 13 pp. in-12 and in-12 oblong. 4 envelopes kept. In Ligugé: Huysmans relates his life in Ligugé, the novice master Dom Jean-Antoine-Martial Besse, his Belgian Benedictine friends, criticizes France, one of "the most repugnant countries there is, the one where one can neither pray nor work in peace [...]", governed by a "terrible muffle" and "incomparable arsouilles", etc. "The sun of Poitou has left and we are in the gray weather which gives to the countryside a perfect melancholy of which I am not far from rejoicing. We have been in the rain for two days now and the fog is perfect for studying the 14th century and hunting for books, the only thing that could be of interest, I think. [...] I am more and more convinced that the real wisdom is to withdraw, far from all the Freemason scoundrels, on a bank, assuming that these bastards let us have it! The government decided "to annoy the monks, to take away the parish of Ligugé and to replace it with a priest and a curate that nobody wants [...]". Huysmans is actively looking for a house to rent for Thyébaut and has entrusted two local recruiters with this task.
