French playwright and librettist. Set of 6 L.A.S. Aulnay, Chatenay. S.l., February 14, 1862, August 2, 1870, July 20, 1899 and s.d. Approximately 10 pp. in-8 and in-12. Long and virulent letter of Barbier against the censorship imposed on his libretto for The Queen of Sheba by Charles Gounod: "the requested cuts are absurd - the authority of a minister does not make them more acceptable - Although the piece is little in the opera, it still has to exist [...]". In another letter Barbier complains about seeing the Landrieux prize awarded to M. Manuel when it was promised to him. He evokes his work, his relations, the Prussian invasion, etc. Attached : - MASSÉ, Victor (1822-1884), French composer. L.A.S. addressed to Jules Barbier. Paris, August 25, 1863. 1 p. in-8. Printed letterhead of the Théâtre impérial de l'Opéra, address on verso of the second leaf. Bends and soiling. "My dear Jules, are you dead? Are you in Aulnay? Are you working for me?
