XVIIIth c. | MANUSCRIT - [SAINT-ESPRIT, Ordre du]. Payment of the arrears of the perpetual and life annuities constituted on the order of the Holy Spirit for the year Seven Hundred and Seventy-One. P., 1775. 2 vol. in-folio, full marbled calf, inscriptions in gilt letters on the first plates, ribbed spines decorated with gilt fleurons, red morocco title-pieces, gilt fillets on the edges, red edges. of (86) ff. - (82) ff., Handwritten "triplicate" copies copied from the original account books of the annuities paid on the order of the Holy Spirit for the years 1771 and 1773. In 1578, Henri III founded the Order of the Holy Spirit, to which he granted in 1582, the collection of the right of the golden marc, a tax on all offices at each change of holder. For the collection of this duty, treasurers and controllers had been instituted, replaced by the office of Treasurer General of the Marc d'Or, held by François Louis Tronchin (1743-1784). [I] "Account of Mr. François Louis Tronchin Treasurer General of the Marc d'Or, appointed by the Council's decree of June 18, 1770 and letters patent on the same of June 18, 1771 registered in the Chamber on July 21, 1773 to make the payment of the arrears of the perpetual annuities at five percent, as well as the life annuities at nine and seven and a half percent and the reimbursement of part of the capital of the perpetual annuities constituted on the order of the Holy Spirit" for the year 1771. [II] "Account of Mr. François Louis Tronchin General Treasurer of the Marc d'or, committed to make the payment of the perpetual annuities as well at 5 per cent, as life annuities at 9 and 7 1/2 per cent and the refunding of part of the capitals of the perpetual annuities constituted on the order of the St. Esprit" for the year 1773. A fine copy in gilt and ornate calf from the Tronchin library, with label from the family estate in Bessinge near Geneva, indicating: "Économie politique Finances 3173". On the first cover of the first volume, in gold letters: "Rente[s] perpétuelles et viagères sur l'Ordre du S. Esprit in the year 1771/M. Tronchin Treasurer General of the Marc d'or/M. Le Vacher Duplessis Procureur"; on the first cover of the second volume, in gold letters: "Rentes sur l'Ordre du S. Esprit created [sic] in June 1770/Year 1773/M. François Louis Tronchin Treasurer Payr./M. Le Vacher Duplessis Procureur".
