XVIIIe s. | LIVRE DE FÊTES - Description des festes données par la ville de Paris à l'occasion du mariage de Madame Louise-Élisabeth de France, & de Dom Philippe, Infant & Grand amiral d'Espagne, les vingt-neuvième & trentième août mil sept cent trente-neuf
P., P.J. Le Mercier, 1740, large folio, red morocco, spine with ornate and fleur-de-lys spine, on the boards, fleur-de-lys framing lace with corner fleuron and arms stamped in gold in the center, gilt edges, interior scroll.
First and only edition published on the occasion of the marriage by proxy of the eldest daughter of Louis XV (aged 12) with Philippe de Bourbon (aged 19), infant of Spain, second son of Philippe V of Spain and founder of the House of Bourbon-Parma.
Beautiful etched illustrations including a large title vignette by SOUBEYRAN after BOUCHARDON, a large headband by RIGAUD depicting the whole of the nautical joust, repeated initials. 13 large plates, 8 of them in double-page, drawn and engraved by J.-F. Blondel, professor at the Academy of Architecture, Gabriel, Servandoni... plate n°8 is numbered twice and there is no plate n°6. Are represented the illuminations and fireworks given on the Seine in front of the Louvre, the illuminated boats or still sections of the building of the City hall of Paris with scenes of ball. The party took place on the Seine, between the Pont-Neuf and the Pont-Royal, which hosted an ephemeral architecture designed to be extended into the night. The next day, a masked ball, given in the Hôtel de ville, transformed and "rebuilt" for the event, lasted until 8 am. Later that day, Louise-Elisabeth left her twin, her family and Versailles to join her husband in Spain, where she remarried on October 30.
The copies in period morocco with the arms of the city of Paris were intended, according to their decoration, for the king's family or the various ministers; the one presented here has on the upper cover, in a band floating in gilt letters the inscription: "Menus plaisirs du roy". Some rubbing, small cracks in the spines, restored corners, restoration of the morocco, some stains and scratches; some foxing.
