Nice set of 19 newspapers, publications and clippings relating the work of Victor Hugo composed of 3 issues of the Charivari : june 24, 1862, june 29, 1862, june 30, 1862 (each issue presents an excerpt of Victor Hugo's play Les Misérables); 2 issues of the newspaper L'Etoile : n°5157 of January 18, 1827 and n°5181 of February 21, 1827 (These two issues present critical observations of Victor Hugo's work); n°14 of the Journal des Abrutis of April 4, 1878; n°24 of L'Illustration européenne of April 24, 1875 (in which is the publication of a youthful work of Victor Hugo); n°1354 of the newspaper Le Voleur dated June 15, 1883, of which a passage is devoted to Victor Hugo's La Légende des Siècles; 8 issues of Le Monde Illustré : n°1150 of April 12, 1879, n°1156 of May 24, 1879, n°1160 of June 21, 1879, n°1077 of December 1, 1877, n°1339 of November 25, 1882, n°1502 of January 9, 1886; n°1264 of L'Univers Illustré of June 14, 1879; n°200 of June 18, 1833 in which is found on page 3 a reproduction of a lithography of Auguste Bouquet (1810-1846) representing Esmeralda and her goat; a press cutting resulting from n°112 of the Illustrated Newspaper of April 1, 1868; n°5 of the Italian newspaper L'Illustration of January 2, 1868; an illustration of Théo representing the character Mr. Bressant from the play Hernandez. Bressant from the play Hernani (1867); Le Trombinoscope de Touchatout dedicated to Victor Hugo (undated). Attached is an engraving from the newspaper The Graphic (June 15, 1878) depicting Victor Hugo giving a speech at the celebration of Voltaire's centenary at the Théâtre de la Gaîté; an engraving by Eugène Damblans (1865-1945) entitled La Littérature française pendant le siècle de Victor Hugo (1802-1881), a press clipping depicting a full-length portrait of the author from a photograph taken especially for L'Illustration by M. Bertall (1967); Le Gaulois of March 20, 1871; L'Illustration of Saturday, March 14, 1925 mentioning the work of Georges-Victor Hugo (1968-1925), a printed portrait of Victor Hugo made by Arthème Fayard (1866-1936) and printed by Honoré Lefèvre, a press clipping representing the funeral of Frédérick Lemaitre (1800-1876), an actor to whom Victor Hugo regularly appealed; print by Alexandre Baulant (1822-1896) representing Victor Hugo, Viennet, Scribe and Alphonse Karr posing in an interior (around 1850). Numerous illustrations and various formats. Good condition. History: the publication of "Les Misérables" in this newspaper took place before the publication in bookstores of the work. It is the first time that one uses this process of communication. It was usual to do it after the literary publication.
