Nice set of 16 period satirical newspapers, consisting of 4 issues of La Petite Lune: n°23 (November 1879), n°26 (April 1879), n°34 (February 1879) and n°44 (May 1879), in-folio; 3 issues of L'Éclipse: n°168 of January 14, 1872, n°172 of February 11, 1872, n°175 of March 3, 1872; and 3 copies of Le Grelot: No. 9 of June 11, 1874, No. 41 of January 21, 1872, No. 622 of March 11, 1883, Charles-Albert Bertall (1820-1882), Samuel, Rey); No. 1 of the satirical newspaper Les Hommes d'aujourd'hui (August 1878; n°142 of L'Illustration Journal universel of November 15, 1845; n°205 of Journal Amusant of December 3, 1859; n°63 of La Lune of May 19, 1867; n°71 of Bouffon of June 9, 1867; n°109 of Don Quichotte of July 22, 1876. Each copy is illustrated with a caricature signed by André Gill (1840-1885) representing Victor Hugo), Alfred Le Petit (1841-1909), Georges Pilotell (1845-1918), Charles Gilbert-Martin (1839-1905). Attached is a set of clippings from various newspapers: Les Représentants représentés (July 20, 1849) illustrating a caricature of Victor Hugo; from an unidentified newspaper caricaturing Victor Hugo at the Remembrance of the Peace Congress; unidentified newspaper depicting Victor Hugo and Émile Girardin seeking to raise Prince Louis on a bulwark; Galerie charivarique (August 30, 1873) with an illustration of Victor Hugo supported by allegories; a caricature from the periodical L'Éclipse (March 22, 1871); another from Représentants en représentation (February 1871); one from Charivari (July 4, 1867) illustrating Victor Hugo and the performance of his play Hernani at the Théâtre-Français, two others from an unidentified newspaper (August 8, 1848) showing Victor Hugo embracing other politicians during the Congress of Peace; one from Charivari (March 30, 1843) with Victor Hugo looking at the sky; two from Charivari (January 1, 1865 and February 1, 1879) with sketches of Cham caricaturing Victor Hugo; one from L'Illustration journal universel (1849) with various caricatures of the author; one from La Vie Parisienne (March 30, 1872) comically illustrating the play Ruy Blas; one representing Victor Hugo's head resting on a book entitled Les Châtiments from an unidentified newspaper; and two other clippings presenting caricatures of Victor Hugo from an unidentified newspaper. Attached is a lithograph by Gérard Grandville entitled La Grande Course au Clocher Académique (December 1839). Numerous illustrations and various formats. Small freckles and slight traces of moisture.
