VACQUERIE AUGUSTE (1819-1895)
French poet and playwright, brother-in-law of Léopoldine Hugo. L.A.S.: "A. Vacquerie", addressed to Monsieur Challamel, May 15, 1840, in-4°, 2 pages, with brown ink postmark. Tears. Text: "I went to your house today, because I really regretted not meeting you. I don't know if you have read in the Artist an article by Janin against the drama and the verses about the Rays and Shadows. It is impossible that a newspaper which represents the literary idea of France should let such an article pass without protest. As it is already a week since the article appeared, if you find it too late to answer directly in a fortnight, we could link this to some general questions, and, for example, find out about this article, by whom the criticism should be made. It would put the paper on a good footing to always take the defense of art when a known pen attacks it. I beg you to write me if you want me to do it, and in what terms it would be necessary to remain towards Janin (...)". History: the brother of the author of this letter, Charles, was the husband of Victor Hugo's daughter, Léopoldine. At Hugo's death, he was one of his executors.
