HUGO Victor (1802-1885)
L.A.S.: "Victor Hugo", addressed to Gilles Vital, Wednesday March 6 (undated), preserved with its envelope. Small tears, stains. Text: "Sir, I would be charmed to have the honor of receiving Saturday evening (9 ½), gentlemen of the Voltaire committee. Please accept the assurance of all my cordial sentiments." History: Voltaire's birthday was the same year as Rousseau's. There were tensions in both philosophical parties. Hugo in his much-acclaimed speech for Voltaire's centenary managed the feat of paying tribute to both men and thus satisfying both sides.
