HUGO Victor (1802-1885)
Autograph piece, with ink stamp. Small tears, stains, but good general condition. Rare document in Victor Hugo's hand, concerning the seances and turntable sessions in which he participated. Text: "Are there in the unknown of the night mocking beings who play with our sleep?" Provenance: former Victor Hugo collection. Bears the stamp in blue ink of the notary who dealt with the estate of Victor Hugo, bearing the inscription: "Succession V. H., cote: 142, pièce: 101, Me Gatine, N", with the notary's initials. This sentence is taken up in Maurice Levaillant's book in his chapter "La crise mystique de Victor Hugo à Jersey", page 587, published in La Revue on May 15, 2016. History: this sentence was noted during one of the turntable sessions organized during his exile in Jersey between 1853 and 1855. Following his testamentary wishes, all of Victor Hugo's writings should have ended up at the BNF. It is therefore very rare to find one of the author's writings with the stamp of the notary who handled his estate. For the record: when Victor Hugo died, his son-in-law, Édouard Lockroy, had the manuscript cabinet where this fragment was kept sealed. This cupboard was opened by the notary whose stamp appears on this document.
