ECOLE FRANÇAISE début du XIXe siècle
Presumed portrait of the young Victor Hugo (1802-1885). Wash and ink on cardboard preserved under glass in a blackened wood frame. Slight traces of humidity, but good general condition. Sight : Diam. : 9 cm. Frame: Diameter: 15 cm. History: this is a portrait of the future great writer at the age of 9. This work most probably belonged to his mother, born Sophie Trébuchet (1772-1821), when in 1811, far from the family home, the young Victor and his brother Eugène (1800-1837), were boarders in a religious institution in Madrid, the College of the Nobles. Around 1813 he moved to Paris with his mother, who had been separated from her husband for several years and was having an affair with General Victor Fanneau de la Horie (1766-1812). Provenance: estate of the Fanneau de la Horie family. For the 220th anniversary of Victor Hugo's birth, we offer you a beautiful collection of historical souvenirs, correspondence and commemorative objects about one of the most important writers of the French language, from the collection of an amateur "I am one of those who want for this noble country freedom and not compression, continuous growth and not reduction, power and not servitude, greatness and not nothingness." Victor Hugo
