LASALLE Philippe (1723-1804)
Catherine II of Russia decorating Count Alexis Orloff with the order of Saint George. Large oval medallion, decorated with a brocaded lampas, grey-sepia camaïeu, preserved in its original giltwood frame. Misses, accidents, in the state. Sight : H. : 40 cm - W. : 33 cm. Frame: H.: 50 cm - W.: 44 cm. Provenance : Drouot sale, June 22, 1998. History : This allegorical composition as well as the five known portraits of Philippe de Lassalle are all woven in cameo and give the illusion of a stone bas-relief. They are of the same oval format, 40 x 33 cm, intended to be cut out and applied on a woven surround of a rich garland of polychrome flowers tied with a ribbon in the upper part. It is on this "entourage" that usually appears the signature of Philippe de Lassalle and possibly an exergue of Voltaire made in embroidery. This copy is an exception. It was originally stretched on a pine frame and set in a gilded wood frame. This arrangement has the advantage that the abundance of weft fleets can be examined on the reverse side since the decoration is entirely brocaded. If these woven portraits are known in a very small number of copies, because Philippe de Lassalle would never have commercialized this production, the tableautin of Catherine II and Orlov, offered by the author to the empress and preserved in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, has always been considered as "unicum".
