LARGE VASE IN HARD PORCELAIN. Manufacture... - Lot 135 - Coutau-Bégarie
LARGE VASE IN HARD PORCELAIN. Manufacture Royale, Sèvres, 1837. Lancel model of 3rd size, with side handles with gold background, decorated with a polychrome portrait representing in medallion the king Louis-Philippe I (1773-1850), after the portrait realized in 1831 by Nicolas Gosse (1787-1878), where he wears the uniform of the National Guard with the plate and the cordon of the order of the Legion of honor and the insignia of the order of Leopold I of Belgium, framed by a frieze of palms and laurels in gold and platinum enhancement held by a ribboned bow, the reverse is in a cartel symbols illustrating the arts in gold and platinum, including music, painting, poetry and architecture, surrounded by a garland of laurel leaves gold and platinum on a blue background. Resting on the lower part on a square gilt bronze base. Manufacture of Sevres, without apparent marks. Restoration at the level of the neck, but good general condition. H. : 33 cm - L. : 15 cm. Reference : the Lancel shape designed in 1829 is one of the most frequently produced vase shapes by the Sèvres factory until the Second Empire. Our vase is very close in shape and decoration to the one we sold on November 18, 2020, decorated with a medallion representing Prince Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orleans. It is very likely that originally these two vases formed a pair. Provenance: this vase made by the Sèvres factory on July 22, 1837 was sold for 500 francs (Vv3, 23-77) and delivered for the Count of Neuilly [a title used by King Louis-Philippe for his personal purchases] in August 1850 (Sèvres archive reference: Vbb11, fol.35v°). A counterpart to this vase representing the Duke of Orleans was made at the same time, but sold on December 24, 1853 (V38, 90v°) for 500 francs. It is the latter that we sold on November 18, 2020 under n° 121.
