Edouard PINGRET. 1785 - 1869
Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Daurier Inscribed in ink on the frame: Professor of chemistry, director of the free public courses of industrial sciences of the city of Nancy, born November twenty-three thousand eight hundred and four in Metz, department of Moselle, painted in Paris in 1831 by Edouard Pingret Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left. 40,5 x 32cm. (Some accidents, on its canvas cracked. Original gilded stucco frame with accidents and missing pieces) Notes: Edouard Pingret, a socialite painter who made many portraits in the good aristocracy, and interpretations of paintings in the spirit of the eighteenth century. A portrait in the same spirit, in a very similar frame, was sold in Berlin in 2020. The artist was presented in the year 1834, in his office with a lot of details, like our painting. Another painting, (56 x 46cm), close to ours, depicts a Bordeaux notable sitting at his desk (Sale Drouot Me Audap 29.11.2017, sold for 1,600). Nevertheless, a portrait, of Marshal Lobau, posing in Jean-Pierre Dantan's studio, with as much detail, at Arcurial had been sold for 16,000, but the subject depicted was known and the canvas was larger (58 x 69 cm).
