Extraordinary bed all face in mahogany and... - Lot 320 - Coutau-Bégarie
Extraordinary bed all face in mahogany and mahogany veneer, decorated with a large shell resting on bouquets of rushes painted in the natural from which fly silver swans. It rests on a wide mahogany veneer base with wooden casters. The backrest is entirely carved in a single piece of mahogany. Early 19th century. H. : 116 cm, W. : 224 cm, D. : 150 cm Bedding, 185 x 115 cm (Small missing pieces, cracks on the side jambs) Notes : The swan is traditionally associated with the empress Josephine, Indeed, the empress was the first to acclimatize in captivity in her estate of Malmaison, from 1803, black swans, which were still unknown in Europe, and their fame has long made people believe that Josephine had made this animal her emblem. These large swans in silver wood are reminiscent of the furniture in the silver boudoir created in 1807 and remodeled in 1813 for Caroline Murat at the Elysée Palace. Our bed, which seems unique in its naturalistic aspect, testifies to a particularly prestigious commission. In particular, the use of a large mahogany plank in which the back of the shell is carved indicates considerable means for such an implementation.
