Sofa with Turkish style in molded wood, carved and lacquered gray, it rests on six fluted and filleted feet, the supports of armrests decorated with acanthus leaf, the back in gondola with scrolls. Louis XVI period. H. : 92 cm, W. : 179,5 cm, D. : 65,5cm (very worn apricot silk velvet upholstery, reinforcement crosspieces) Provenance : Note in chalk on a crosspiece : Mr Séligman. Jacques Seligmann et Cie" was founded in Paris in 1880 by Jacques Seligmann (1858-1923), at 37 rue des Mathurins, and in 1900 the Galerie Seligmann opened at Place Vendôme. Demand from the American market eventually led them to open an office in New York. In 1909, Seligmann bought the Hôtel de Sagan (formerly the Hôtel de Monaco) on Rue Saint-Dominique in Paris, which became his commercial showcase for major exhibitions and client visits, as well as to display the sumptuous remains of the famous Hertford-Wallace collection, kept since 1872 in the hotel at 2, rue Lafitte, which had been bequeathed in 1912 to Lady Sackville-West by Sir John Murray Scott, and was acquired en bloc - and without having seen it, it is said - for the enormous sum of £270,000 (out of an estimate of 350,000).
