Box decorated with scenes of courtly love in embossed leathe - Lot 156
Box decorated with scenes of courtly love in embossed leather, stamped and engraved France or Flanders, (the wooden core replaced in the mid-twentieth century) 15 x 31 x 25 cm. Note: Our box, of beautiful dimensions, evokes the medieval secular art, and the tradition of gifts encouraged by courtly love. It is to be compared with the famous kunstkammer of the Hohenzollern princes in Sigmaringen. We refer to the chromolithographs of the 19th century published by Jacob Heinrich Hefner-Alteneck in his book Trachten, Kunstwerke und Gerätschaften (...), Frankfurt, 1889, Pl 206 and 207. Ruined by the First World War, the German princes sold most of their collection in the late 1920s. Works consulted: - Collection Spitzer, catalog of its sale, 17 April to 16 June 1893, Paris, n° 800-824. J. Cherry, The Talbot Casket and Related Late Medieval Leather Caskets, in Archéologia ..., vol. 107, 1982, pp. 130-140
