DJANGO REINHARDT (1910/1953) : Jazz guitarist... - Lot 362 - Coutau-Bégarie
DJANGO REINHARDT (1910/1953) : Jazz guitarist and composer. 1 guitar made in the workshops of René Gérôme in Mirecourt in the Vosges, on which the virtuoso Django Reinhardt played. This instrument has the number 669 and dates from September 1946. It is a study guitar that the musician always kept close to him to compose and rehearse. He took it on tour in the USA and Canada. Sometimes, he used it in public in restaurants or cabarets. On May 16, 1953, Django Reinhardt died of a cerebral hemorrhage. The next day, his wife burned all his personal effects and instruments, according to an old gypsy rite that consists in erasing all traces of the deceased. This guitar escaped this tradition because at the time of the recording of his last album in April 1953, Django had taken it to a Parisian luthier to have it overhauled and after having offered it to a member of his family.
