Henri MARTIN (1860-1943)
Young girl in the shade Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Titled on a label "Exposition de Reims" on the back of the frame. 54 x 45 cm Provenance : - Former Gabriel Holagray Collection (1858-1959) - In his descendants We had already offered for sale a work of Henri Martin "Pergola in Autumn, Marquayrol" from the same Gabriel Holagray collection. A scholar, writer and collector, he was one of the founders and secretary of the Société des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux. This young girl must have been part of the painter's familiar circle in his property of Bastide-du-Vert. The artist painted a few portraits there, sometimes in bust form. The model is placed here in the garden, lit by a light subdued by the foliage. We find the delicate physical type dear to the painter with the perfect ovals of the face and hair. The luminous vibration is provided by the impressionist divided touch while the decision to place the face slightly in the shade generates a delicate mystery: Henri Martin remembers the turn of the 90's, when his painting was strongly impregnated with the ambient symbolism
