Solid Cuban mahogany display cabinet, cornice... - Lot 204 - Coutau-Bégarie
Solid Cuban mahogany display cabinet, cornice in gendarme hat, carved with fleurons, scrolled front legs. Ornamentation of cut ironwork with arabesque and openwork palmettes decoration including two lock entrances, a scissor espagnolette and a lock. Second part of the 18th century H. : 291 L. 195 cm D. 79 cm (small accidents and cracks) Notes: With its monumental size of nearly three meters, our solid mahogany cabinet is characteristic of the Bordeaux display furniture. It takes up the classical Bordeaux configuration, with solid mahogany wood of high quality, generous curves, an interior sideboard and important ironwork. Designed to display silverware, this type of furniture was the prerogative of the commercial elite in the 18th century, a period when, thanks to the triangular trade, the city was to become one of the most prosperous cities in the world. These characteristics can be admired on the cupboard or the scriban-library preserved in the Hôtel de Lalande, which is now the Bordeaux Museum of Decorative Arts.
