Chest of drawers of between two curved in... - Lot 170 - Coutau-Bégarie
Chest of drawers of between two curved in European varnish called Martin varnish. Rich decoration in the Chinese taste. Cambered feet with sabots and gilded bronze falls. It opens in front of two drawers without crossbar with decoration of birds. Pyrenean red marble top. Stamped : - L.BOUDIN Léonard Boudin (1735-1804) - Cabinetmaker. Paris. Master on March 4, 1761. And twice "JME". - CB.PROUOST Charles Bernard Provost, received master in 1737. Louis XV period. H. : 86 cm, W. : 97,5 cm, D. : 53 cm (Accidents to the lacquer). Comparative works : - A pair of European lacquered corner pieces sold on the English market at Christie's on July 12, 2021 from the collection "Rita Espirito Santo" (lot 6). - A pair of European varnish corner pieces sold at Thierry de Maigret on December 7, 2012 (lot 301). After his accession to the master's degree, he set up his workshop in impasse de la Boule-Blanche, in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, a privileged district for seat and furniture craftsmen of the time, and practiced for nearly forty years. This unusually long activity, combined with the excessively small number of pieces of furniture preserved bearing his stamp, seems to be indicative of the role of subcontractor that the cabinetmaker played with some of his colleagues in the capital. This fully explains the presence of the two stamps on our chest of drawers
