Terracotta sculpture representing the executioner of the group of the Decollation of St. Paul. H. : 54,5 cm (Numerous accidents and damages) The group of the Decollation of St. Paul, was commissioned by Virgilio Spada to Algarde in 1631 and was officially inaugurated in 1647 for the chapel of the Spada family in the church of St. Paul Major in Bologna. Three preparatory drawings were made by Alessandro Algardi to present his project before proposing proofs in terracotta. A bozzetto of the same size as our sculpture is kept in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg (inv n° 661) (fig). It came from the Farsetti collection and entered the imperial collection in 1800. Another one is kept in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich (inv n° 90/249) and finally another one in the collection of the Abegg foundation in Reggisburg in Switzerland, fragmentary but of larger size.
