Extremely rare and exceptional large Flemish... - Lot 122 - Coutau-Bégarie
Extremely rare and exceptional large Flemish sundial with horizontal brass table of square shape (43,5 x 43,5 cm) engraved with Latin texts indicating the art of its reading. It seems that this instrument was commissioned as a gift for the Dominican preacher Antonin de Meester born on October 28 at the time of his installation in the priesthood on December 17. One important thing to know here is that it was drawn by the Franciscan friar Raphael and engraved also by a Franciscan friar, as Dominicans do not work with their hands. This beautiful sundial is in very good condition. The time table goes from four o'clock in the morning to eight o'clock in the evening. The dotted lines indicate the different movements of the sun during the year and the saints to be honored on those dates. The text here is cold stamped in small capitals. Composition extremely remarkable of finesse. The general layout is of great beauty. End of the XVIIth century (missing the small gnomon) 43.5 cm, 43.5 cm General motto in the form of a rebus: SUME CAPUT VENTI Take the initial of Vent V XERCIS CAPUT ADDE GEMENTI Add the initial of Xerxes. The Meesters, ennobled in the eighteenth century, belonged to a family of notables from the region of Mechelen (Belgium) DELINEABAT EN RAPHAEL (or RAPHAN L) MINOR. ITAL.
