ESPAGNE, XVIIe siècle
Walnut panel carved in high relief, polychromed and gilded, representing the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception surrounded by, among other things, a city, a fountain and flowers; inscriptions TA PVLCHRA ES AMICO MEA / TEMPLUM DEI / LUBRIS DAM / FONS STONATVS / LILVM CONVALIVM / HORTVS CONCLVSVS / CIVITAS DEI. H. : 89 cm - L. : 53 cm (Worming, small missing parts, hands redone) The first lines of inscription of this panel take up the Latin prayer dedicated to the Virgin: Tota Pulchra es Maria, prayer sung by the Franciscans. This prayer is taken from the Song of Songs and appears in a context of disputatio between Dominicans and Franciscans about the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The two orders were so strongly opposed on the subject of the Immaculate Conception that the dogma could not be promulgated by Pius IX until 1854, after the oppositions had been appeased. However, the Franciscans have used this hymn in their liturgy since the 17th century. The other inscriptions on the panel are inspired by the litanies of the Virgin, where all the religious qualities of Mary are listed: Temple of God, Lily of the Valley (in reference to the month of May, dedicated to Mary), Enclosed Garden, City of God
