Portrait of the Empress Catherine II of Russia (1729-1796), wearing a diadem and a laurel wreath. Miniature on ivory, oval shape, preserved in its original carved and gilded wooden frame surmounted by the large arms of the Imperial House of Russia. According to the handwritten inscription on the reverse of the frame, this miniature comes from the apartments of Emperor Napoleon III in the Tuileries Palace and was taken during the siege of Paris, May 24, 1871, by James Burnley. Wear and tear, but good general condition. Sight: H.: 6.5 cm - W.: 5.5 cm. Frame: H.: 23.5 cm - W.: 21 cm. History: born in Geneva, Henri-François Viollier arrived at the imperial court of Russia in 1780. He became the protégé of Emperor Paul I's wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna (1759-1828), for whom he painted numerous miniature portraits of the imperial family and members of the Russian court. He died on February 28, 1829 in St. Petersburg, where he is buried.
