Rare fan leaf in Chantilly polychrome Courseulles,... - Lot 371 - Coutau-Bégarie
Rare fan leaf in Chantilly polychrome Courseulles, spindles, late 19th century. Exceptional fan leaf in very rare polychrome Chantilly lace from Courseulles, with a decoration well typified by the Art Nouveau style, five irises and their supple leaves in symmetry, the two rounded edges finished by a frieze of flowers or small cartouches made in silk in several shades of green, yellow, pink, mauve, with a sowing of small circles in fine silver metallic thread, the petals of the irises enhanced by the same silver thread. Dim. laid flat: 42 x 20 cm, lace height: 14.5 cm (perfect condition, never used, great freshness of colors, oxidized silver thread) The polychrome Chantilly of Courseulles was invented in 1896 by M. Robert, director of the workshop of Courseullessur- Mer, who, with the help of the painter Félix Aubert, produced in particular fan leaves in the spirit of this ornamental movement then very in vogue, the Art Nouveau. The production of this polychrome lace lasted very little time since it ceased with the first world war. The specificity of the Chantilly polychrome of Courseulles is a twisted thread, today untraceable, with four very twisted silk threads of different colors but with very close tones. Very few examples survived until us, the smoothness of the silk threads used for its realization as well as the mordant of the dyes making this Chantilly polychrome more fragile than the laces carried out out of linen or silk.
