Rare officer's helmet of Gendarme of the... - Lot 236 - Coutau-Bégarie
Rare officer's helmet of Gendarme of the House of the King, model 1814. One-piece helmet, made of moulded and varnished leather. Rich gilded brass trimmings, including on each side flaming thunderbolts from which lightning bolts emerge. The front plate is decorated with smoke and lightning, with the Arms of France surmounted by the Royal Crown. At the bottom, a flaming lightning and a ribbon on which is written in relief the motto of the Corps des Gendarmes de la Garde "QUO JUBET IRATUS JUPITER", "LA OU L'ORDONNE JUPITER EN COLERE" or "DANS LA DIRECTION INDIQUEE PAR JUPITER COURROUCE". Smooth leather back band. Gilded brass visor circled with a ring and engraved with foliage. Scaled chinstrap in guilloche and gilded brass. Crest stamped with a series of lightning bolts decreasing towards the back with a festoon on the top. The mane is missing. The finely decorated round pen holder is present. The interior is made of leather and silk. This headdress is in a remarkable state of preservation and use, and this is largely due to its original transport box, lined with white skin.
