Daniel SAINT (1778-1847)
Presumed portrait of the Duchess of Montmorency (1774-1846) Rectangular miniature on ivory representing a young woman in profile seated on a chair, the latter covered with a saffron-colored paisley shawl, typical of the early 19th century. She is dressed in a white muslin dress, her hands delicately intertwined and placed on her thighs, her hair in the fashion of the First Empire. One end of the shawl is placed on her right knee. In the background appears a low wall on which rests a stone vase sculpted in the antique style and two bright red rosebushes. The horizon offers us a view of a green countryside. Signed lower right "Saint". Gilded wood frame decorated with a frieze of palmettes and an ear of wheat, the corners decorated with an acanthus leaf. Sight: 20 x 15 cm (slight accidents) Daniel Saint is one of the greatest French miniaturists, recognized by his peers, he obtained several medals. He was one of the portraitists of the Bonaparte family, and when the Restoration came, of King Charles X. The Louvre Museum has some examples of his work. Among them, the portrait of Madame Savary, duchess of Rovigo, which is similar to our miniature
