Portrait of Princess Izabela CZARTORYSKA (1746-1835). Miniature on ivory of rectangular form representing a young woman in full length. She is dressed in a blue and white cotton and silk dress, one hand nonchalantly resting on a garland of flowers surrounding a stone urn, she wears a hairstyle called "à la sultane", typical of the end of the XVIIIth century. The reverse of the miniature bears a consignment from a first hand, a name identified as "Czartoryska" as well as a sentence in Polish. Frame with pearl frieze and gilt bronze bow. Sight: 17.2 x 11.3 cm (Two cracks on the left, slight wear) Izabela Czartoryska, born Flemming, was a Polish princess of the late 18th century. She was a patron of the arts and a great collector of works of art, and in 1796 she founded the first museum in Poland. A flamboyant lover of the Age of Enlightenment, she had many affairs. Among them were the King of Poland, Stanislas II Augustus, and the Duke of Lauzun, with whom she had a son. The Czartoryski Museum, founded by Izabela Czartoryska, has a prestigious collection including Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine.
