École FRANÇAISE de la fin du XVIIIe siècle
Venus Medici Bronze with light brown patina H. 38.2 cm on a red jasper base This bronze statuette is a replica of the famous ancient Hellenistic marble that has been in the Uffizi Museum in Florence since 1688. The date and place of its discovery are not documented today, but it is mentioned for the first time in 1559. It was then published for the first time in 1638 by François Perrier in his Recueil de planches gravées à l'eau forte illustrant les plus belles statues romaines. The sculpture was transported from Rome to Florence between 1677 and 1679 in the garden of the Villa Medici. The theme was very popular with artists and enthusiasts in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in France. This bronze proof, of a beautiful quality of casting, has the particularity of taking the whole of the original model of the Villa Medici, including the dolphin which is used as a support to the antique version in marble, while removing the childish geniuses which ride the marine animal
