Le Mans, atelier de Matthieu Dionise et de Gervais I Delabarre, premier quart du XVIIe siècle
Virgin and Child in terracotta and polychrome; made in three parts, two of which are joined with four main vent holes in the back, a long vent behind the neck and a smaller one on the skull. Standing and carrying the Child on her left arm, Mary is dressed in a dress with a rounded neckline, belted under the chest, she is topped with a long veil forming a mantle, one side of which returns to the front creating rounded folds. Height : 145 cm (accidents and damages, reinforcements, restorations) Provenance : private collection of the Sarthe. A Virgin and Child dated between 1613 and 1619 and attributed to Matthieu Dionise and Gervais I Delabarre is preserved in the church of Notre-Dame-de l'Assomption at Périgné-l'Evêque in the Sarthe. We find an almost identical composition of the draperies in the bottom of the dress; as well as the same inspiration in the locks of the hairstyle. The expression of the face is however less mannerist and moves away from the models of the Renaissance to be more baroque. As for the manufacture, there are the same vent holes in the back and the head. Book consulted: Cahier du Patrimoine 66, Terre et Ciel, La sculpture en terre cuite du Maine. XVIe et XVIIe siècle, éditions du Patrimoine, 2000 p 94
