Signed lower right: Adrien Marie A pupil of Isidore Pils, Adrien Marie was one of the greatest illustrators of Paris during the Belle Epoque, having collaborated on l'Illustration, Le Monde illustré, Music & Drama, La Saison théâtrale, Paris illustré, etc. He also illustrated the first edition of Les Misérables (1862), Lettres mon Moulin (1869), several Jules Verne books, etc. He also illustrated the first edition of Les Misérables (1862), Les Lettres de mon Moulin (1869), several Jules Verne books, etc. In 1886, he participated in the second International Black and White Exhibition where he won the gold medal in the Drawing section. A regular visitor to theatres, he was notably responsible for the portrait of Giuseppe Verdi conducting the opera orchestra at the first performance of Aida in Paris in 1880.
