Views of the Château de Soucelles, courtyard and garden sides, 1852 Pencil, watercolor, and gouache on paper (one pair) 22 x 40 cm. Each signed, located and dated: Maugendre 1852 Located in Maine-et-Loire, the château de Soucelles, whose current architectural state dates from the 18th century, belonged in 1852 to Ida, Countess Albert de la Rochefoucauld-Bayers (1804-1884), née Leroy de La Potherie. She inherited the estate from her father, Louis (1762-1847), marshal of camp, count of La Potherie, leader in the Chouannerie. Between 1790 and 1810, the family had cultivated a vast and valued collection of roses. Ida also owned the castle of Challain-la-Potherie, a neo-Renaissance creation of the architect Louis Visconti. Maugendre, known for his picturesque views of Normandy (Langrune, Saint-Aubin, Saint-Lô, Trouville, Saint Vaast, Le Havre, Régneville) and Brittany (Saint Pol de Léon), was also regularly commissioned to paint views of castles: Maintenon (at the Noailles'), Villebon (at the Pontoi-Pontcarré's), Nacqueville (at the Tocqueville's).
