Honoré D'ALBERT, duc de Luynes (1802-1867)
Malta: the Crypt of the Grand Masters with the tombs of L'Isle-Adam and Valletta Black stone 19 x 26.5 cm Titled at the bottom. Joseph Frédéric DEBACQ (1800-1892) View of the Lazaret of Malta; April 1842 Black stone 19 x 26,5 cm Titled at the bottom. Joseph Frédéric DEBACQ (1800-1892) Malta: Underground chapel, tombs of the Grand Masters Black stone 19 x 26,5 cm Titled at the bottom. On their return from their stay in Egypt, the two acolytes Luynes and Debacq, fervent archaeologists, stopped off in Malta, whose mineral beauty, beaten by the sun, must have reminded them of the banks of the Nile. Built in gratitude for the victory over the Ottomans during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, the co-cathedral of St John is the island's baroque jewel, the work of Gerolamo Cassar and Mattia Preti. In addition to the impressive floor, covered with 405 knights' tombstones, of The Beheading of St. John the Baptist by Caravaggio, visitors can discover, under the high altar, the crypt of the Grand Masters and their sculpted tombs. Our drawings show two of the most famous mausoleums: those of Philippe de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam (1464 - 1534), and Jean Parisot de La Valette, respectively 44th and 49th Grand Master. While the former is known for having supervised the transfer of the Order of Rhodes to Malta, the latter distinguished himself in the famous siege of 1565, when 600 knights of the Order, supported by the Maltese population and several thousand mercenaries, held out against 30,000 Ottomans for nearly four months.
