Antoine Louis BARYE (1795-1875)
Tiger devouring a gavial (second reduction) Model created in 1836 Bronze with golden patina, old cast (between 1838 and 1845) Signed and dated "BARYE 1836" on the terrace H. 10 x W. 27 cm Related work: -Antoine-Louis Barye, Tigre dévorant un gavial, 1832, bronze, lost wax casting, H. 39 x W. 105 x D. 40 cm, Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. R.F. 2991 Related literature: -Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, Barye, le catalogue raisonné des sculptures, Gallimard,2000, model listed under n°A74(3), p. 206 Antoine-Louis Barye presented the plaster model of Tiger devouring a gavial at the 1831 Salon. This event is considered by specialists as the real starting point of animal sculpture as we understand it today. Barye succeeded in making animal sculpture a genre in its own right, rising to the same level as the historical and biblical genres appreciated at the Salon. In 1836, in view of the work's success, the model was reduced, somewhat modified and cast in bronze. Our copy, in addition to its rare golden patina, bears the date "1836" which only the oldest reductions have. Production continued during the sculptor's association with Martin (27 copies) and then posthumously.
