Hard stone mosaic plaque representing a gallant... - Lot 290 - Coutau-Bégarie
Hard stone mosaic plaque representing a gallant scene in the style of the XVIIth century. 19,5 x 15 cm Italian work from the end of the XIXth century (small accidents) Originally from Copenhagen where he learned the art of chiselling, Rudolphi settled in Paris in 1835. He joined the firm of Mention et Wagner, which he took over as Master Goldsmith in 1842. With Carl Wagner, he discovered techniques and subjects from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. He is renowned for his production of cups, boxes, writing cases and clocks inspired by the Renaissance and generally decorated with figures. He had a resounding success when his creations were presented at the Industrial Products Exhibitions in 1844 and 1849, as well as at the Universal Exhibitions of 1851 and 1855. The awards kept coming, notably in Denmark, New York, Dublin and Paris. His fame became international, exporting throughout Europe, but also to Egypt and India. At the beginning of the 1870s, his business declined, as tastes had changed and his art was considered out of fashion. He stopped his activities for good in 1872.
