View of the castle and the village of Seignelay Canvas (enlarged at the top) 145 x 192 cm Jean Baptiste Colbert bought the barony of Seignelay in 1658 where he opened a silk factory. The castle was demolished in 1798 Jean Baptiste Colbert, who called himself Marquis de Seignelay, succeeded his father at the head of the French Navy in 1683 where he directed in particular the drafting of the Code Noir. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France holds a drawing by Louis Baudan (active between 1687 and 1709) which takes up the composition of our painting. This drawing is part of the "Gaignières" collection, a vast undertaking that aimed to compile monuments, castles, tombs and landscapes that have now disappeared. This collection was offered to King Louis XIV.
