Italie du Nord, Venise, XVIe siècle
Kiss of peace In silver plated bronze representing a Pieta, in a frame with fluted pillars, pediment decorated with cherubs' heads, buttresses, base bearing two shields in armorial bearings of silver, three fesses bretessed and counterbretessed of five pieces each charged with five trefoils of gold and the inscription PIETAS ADOMNIA, in a cartouche of cut leather; on the back engraved inscription S.RENAT.BIRAGO. Height : 17,2 cm - Width : 12 cm (Missing the handle at the back) The engraving at the back informs us about the origin of this kiss of peace, it seems that it belonged to the cardinal René de Birague (1506-1583) whose arms are shown on the columns. This cardinal came from a rich Milanese family. His attachment to France earned him the wrath of Duke Sforza after the battle of Pavia; he entered the service of Francis I more directly and became an influential adviser to Henry II and Catherine de Medici.
