Espagne, Burgos, fin du XVe-début du XVIe siècle
Element of an altarpiece In carved walnut representing two holy figures, one of which carries an open book in front of him. Emaciated faces with long wavy hair and beards; they are dressed in a long, belted tunic and a cloak, one side of which returns to the front, forming rounded folds. Height: 50 cm (Worming, cracks and fillings) This ensemble can be compared with a sculpture of Saint Andrew (fig.) kept in a private collection and studied by Victoria Santiago Godos. This sculpture is presented as being in the continuity of Gil de Siloé, a sculptor of the late Hispanic Gothic period. Siloesque reminiscences can be seen, particularly in the face with its simple features and severe expression, the beard and locks of hair in a careful and rigorous definition, but also in the bony hands and the folds of the clothes, which are at the same time supple and heavy. Book consulted: Actas del Congreso Internacional sobre Gil Siloe y la Escultura de su época, Burgos 13-16 October 1999 pp 389-393
