Portraits of the empress Josephine and the empress Marie-Louise. Set of two oval miniatures, preserved under glass, representing the two wives of Emperor Napoleon I, one of which is signed on the right "Isabey". Wear and tear, but good general condition. Sight : H. : 6 cm - W. : 4 cm. Frame: H.: 11 cm - W.: 13.5 cm. Provenance: former collection of Henri d'Escamps (1815-1891), then acquired by Nathan Appleton, fils (1841-1906), as indicated by the handwritten note in English on the reverse. "Josephine, signed Isabey, Marie-Louise, unsigned. From the collection of Madame D'Escamps whose husband was an inspector of fine arts, a friend of Victor Hugo (...) an ardent admirer of Napoleon I. Purchased in 1893 by Nathan Appleton Jr., Boston." History:Henri d'Escamps (1815-1891) was a French archaeologist, art historian who after serving as Victor Hugo's disinterested secretary, became an inspector of fine arts. In 1845, on Victor Hugo's recommendation, he joined the Ministry of the Navy and the Colonies as an editor. He was in charge of writing, for the Council of Ministers, a Memorandum on the rights of France in Madagascar. From this was born the book that made the glory of Henry d'Escamps: Histoire et Géographie de Madagascar
