PODESTI Francesco (1800-1895)
Bust portrait of the Count of Chambord (1820-1883). Unsigned oil on canvas, dated lower left 1840, preserved in its period giltwood frame, decorated with arabesques and floral motifs. Restoration, accidents to the frame, but good general condition. Sight: H.: 63 cm - W.: 51.5 cm. Frame: H.: 86 cm - W.: 75 cm. History: it was during his tour of Europe that the young prince, who arrived in Rome on October 20, 1839, made the acquaintance of the Italian painter Francesco Podesti. It was during the following year that the latter painted the above portrait. This work was widely reproduced in engravings and lithographs during the second half of the 19th century. Several versions of this portrait are known, but each time with slight variations, like the one in the Raymond Jeanvrot collection (Musée de Bordeaux, Inv. 58.1.5443), in which the prince wears a black tie. There is also a full-length version signed by the artist and dated the same year, in which the prince holds a pair of gloves in his left hand (Château de Chambord, Inv. Ch/41/0551) and in another version, the prince wears a cape, in the same pose, but against a green background
